Sneak Peak: Tohaa and Street Graffiks

Here is just a quick sneak peak of some upcoming Tohaa of mine. I'm both hating and loving the process of painting these guys. They are so detailed that it's time-consuming to get everything looking right. On the other hand, they are beautiful models and the final products look pretty.

There are two types of paints that have made these easier to paint: GW shade paints and GW's Lahmian medium. The shade paints make painting the symbiont armor much easier. I lay down a basecoat of white, then cover it in the yellow glaze. Once that is dried I lay down a coat of the orange glaze and then the red one. Then I go back and paint the rest of the model. Once I have completed most of it. I go back with a yellow+white mix and highlight the symbiont armor. It ends up looking pretty decent.

Lahmian medium is amazing for mixing into paints to shade the armor plates. I've been shading my armor plates with Incubi Darkness. This makes the armor a lot colder than you'll find on the studio scheme.

I should have these guys done by next week. When I do, I'll try to get some good photos done for you all.

Next up, I got inspired by some local art to street-out some of my terrain. I hope to get some work like this on my terrain set for Infinity and maybe update some of it so that's more cohesive. This is just me getting out some colors and going to town. I bet my airbrush could really make this more realistic.

Still a WIP but I love shots like this.

Imperial Knight Titan

The last few months have been crazy for me. Lots of work in my professional and personal life. Finishing up my thesis, trip to Istanbul, Prague and Bratislava, and getting ready for Xmas...which means lots of money matters on the mind. Still, I had some time this month to paint an Imperial Knight for a local client. I love this guy because he gives me free reign on color schemes and so on.
The initial inspiration for this guy was from a piece of art from Brom called Last Crusade. As you can see the main colors of the knight are orange, white and brown. Brom is just so amazing with those  tones. However, you will notice that the "base" has a good deal of blue in it. Nice compliment to all the orange.

And here is the result...

The Ogre Family

I did an Ogre Kingdoms army a couple years back and the original client ended up selling the models on ebay, and the new buyer wanted more! So he contacted me and it looks like I will be doing additions to this army for the next few months. This commission was turned around in 5 weeks and represents about 50 hours of work. Managed to squeeze a little more than minimum wage for that, haha!

I started with these little guys. Hard to imagine what an herbivore does with sharp teeth, but its warhammer so anything goes...I guess.
A work in progress shot. Thee models are very complex and need to be painted in pieces. Which is not so convenient but a great challenge.
The strangest thing about these models is...well it is hard to imagine how the ogre re-loads the thing. Maybe he only fires it once.
And the lady on the right is so wonderful. I pulled inspiration from my mother-in-law for her.

The first two maneaters are done.

And now they are four.

The finished battle line.
More shots of the ironblasters.
The firebelly! I didn't have much chance to get pics of him as I was devoted to meeting the deadline.

Parting with the family photo! Have fun with your new owner guys!

A little preview of a post to come. My next commission project is a set of Mechafront Lynx Medium Mecha. Beautiful models these. They take to airbrushing so well.

Sometimes I feel like I am overdoing this white color scheme, but it looks so good on these mechs and stuff. Ah well. I can experiment with other colors on something else.

Had a lot of fun with these...the bases need something next. I might do grass, but I am not sure. We'll have to see.

The wife is going to do some more professional pics of these and then we'll get them out to the client.

And...I think I am overdoing white armor these days.

Mecha Front NorAm Force and Paulson Games reopens

Here is just a WIP shot of my assembled NorAm Force for Mecha Front. I am going to be adding another two lights mecha--NorAm Raptors--with different weapons. I wanted at least two of the Alpha versions as this was the configuration that initially really liked.

My goal with these to paint them up this weekend, primarily with an airbrush and very little brushwork, so that I can get another force painted for games with my friends. Of course I have plans for a terrain too, and 15 mm infantry to use in games as cannon fodder and mission objectives.

For the bases and the terrain, we're going with a ruined urban setting.

Yes, I see those mold lines too and I will handle them before painting. ;)

The makers of Mecha Front have also re-opened Paulson Games at www.paulson-games.com.
This is where you can get a lot of really great mecha and battlesuit parts that make great Tau conversions and crisis suit conversions. Here are some of the crisis suit converting that I did in the past. There's also some that my buddy did, like that Riptide.

Blanchitsu for Tau

Israel Sanchez's Tau Army

It's been a while since I have seen a Tau army like this. The kind that kindles sparks of imagination all through your day. It's here and man, it makes me want to collect and paint an entirely new Tau army. Just look at these models:

Photo Credit: Greggle's Tabletop. Taken at the Las Vegas Open.

Just look at that.

Insane.

You know what? I think I've seen that color scheme before. Oh yeah, I definitely have:

There it is. What's awesome is that he just added orange to really make it pop.

Inspired stuff.

A little commission work, a little Tau work.

I've been working on this unit on and off for a few years now. Main conversion work was done on the legs and arms. Just making them more dynamic and bulky. The arms are made from a combination of forge world battlesuits, grey knight terminator arms, and standard XV8 suit arms.

The backpack jets have been raised slightly, as have the shoulders. This adjusts the proportions slightly to make them more realistic.

The weapon arms are from Paulson games and represent plasma rifles. I'm trying to figure out how to get fusion blasters on these guys. The left arms are out of the question, as I want them to stay as they are. That leaves jetpack mounted fusion blasters...or adding them to the plasma rifles in some way.

The team lead has missiles on his jetpack mount, but that's just temporary. He/she also has forgeworld legs instead of custom-built ones.

Heads or Tails

Ok no tails, but here I am...It's time to choose a head.

We have the classic, off-the-sprue head here.

It's nothing special but it makes the model looks a lot more like the original models. Might kind of fool the viewer into thinking its not actually a conversion.

Next we have a Tael pattern head. This is even more classic than the sprue version. It works a lot better in some ways...mainly because the hand and "face" are in proportion.

Another possibility is a Paulson Games Crisis suit head.
It's original and looks really nice. This is where I am leaning now...but it is a little, just slightly large looking.

Which head would you use?

House Lannister Imperial Knights 36 hours to go

The Lannister Twins

It may seem odd to some, but the Lannisters are actually my favorite house in GOT. There is something about the villians that really get my rocks off. Of course we all love Tyrion, but I really liked Jaime, and Kevan Lannister as well. Then there is the cold, calculating Tywin...Tyrion really gets all his bad-assness from him. Cersei? What's not to like? Love her.

What it really comes down to is good reading. Anyone else got a favorite house? If you say the Starks, you've been watching HBO too much and need to get the books in your hot little hands.

Anyway, here are the Lannister twins that I have been working on. Imperial Knight Titans with big-ass melta-guns. No idea what those things are called but they certainly look dangerous. This project is being done as a commission...and I am two days behind schedule! The bases need to get done and that happens tonights. Then I get some pro-shots of the twins and ship them out.

3D Sketching with the Broadside Kit

Something has recently draw back into 40k and I am prepping a unit of Broadsides to add to my force...as well as a host of other things.

I broke out the broadside kit and realized I just cannot settle for the standard pose. The chest is just too wide...so here I am cutting and sawing to make a new build.

I can't decide if I want him holding a Paulson rifle in one hand...or I want to modify the railrifle so that it is more compact, and resembles something that could fire 4 twin-linked S7 Ap4 shots. I really cannot stand the missile packs for fists concept...

Sometimes I really don't understand why anyone plays anything other than Ogres. These guys just scream warhammer to me. Big, brutal. They're like Orcs but better.

A Break from Commission Work to Speed Paint a Mech

Lots of the work on this MechaFront model were done weeks ago with my airbrush. Last night, I decided to finish it up quickly. I spent about 45 minutes doing this work, then called it a night. I figured this would be good enough for the Tabletop.

I may have played around with the camera effects too much. Here's the original.

Here is a scale shot for a FB commentator.
