Quick Shot of a MechaFront NorAm Lynx Mech

I'm working on this mech for MechaFront, which just happens to be nearing its final few days of its Kickstarter Campaign.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mechafront/mecha-front-miniatures

This Mech was loads of fun to paint. In some ways, the MechaFront models take so well to airbrushing and line highlighting that they almost paint themselves. One thing that is really needed are some great decals to really make these guys shine.

I also found that some controlled weathering and chipping really brought the model to life.
Of course, I am biased as the unofficial and somewhat-slow-to-deliver painter.
Here's to more MechaFront!
Time for me to get my whole NorAm army painted so I can actually get some games in.

The MechaFront Lynx is done and ready to get shipped out. John S., I took your gentle nudges toward weathering to heart and I really feel like it came out well this time. Of course I need practice but so far pretty decent in my eyes. All done with a brush and weathering powders. What a fun miniature this was to paint. Going to get started on a whole force of these guys!

Essay 40k: Will GW's dominance persist?

$

If you scan the blogosphere, as I do, you've probably hit upon a couple posts here and there that are pretty darn critical of anything GW does. The Back 40k became, for a while at least, a hub of GW-bashing with certain writers getting vehement about the company. It made me aware of a general feeling of distaste for GW in the community. I started wondering if GW was headed for a major fall.

On top of the community relations problems, there is the increased competition. Lots of new stuff has hit the scene. I love all of it, but if you cruise the web, I think a lot of people assume this increasing interest in other games will make GW go the way of the squats.

However, it has generally been the rule in business that dominant companies stay dominant, even when you'd expect them to not to be under increased competition.

Many companies and brands have shown this pattern. Wrigley's gum, Coca-Cola, and Pepsi have all maintained dominance in the face of increasing competition for decades. We see this in the social strata, with an increasing and large proportion of wealth controlled by a small group of long dominant individuals. Even actors, stars and writers maintain their dominance over time, even with large influxes of new talent.

So will GW maintain its dominance in the face of new competition?

Let's look at some google trends. Since I'm not going to do any serious research on this, google trends will suffice. Its a quick tool for armchair essays like this one. Below is a graph of interest in the search terms 'Games Workshop' in blue and 'Privateer Press' in red.

What it shows is interest in Privateer Press stays low with no change over time. GW's interest is much higher, but shows a steady decline. That might point to losing dominance, but the end result is still a sector dominated by GW. Instead this could show declining interest in wargaming over time.

Let's try another way. I entered the search terms 'Warhammer 40k', this time in red, and 'Warmachine', this time in blue.

Basically the same story. Dominant 40k, but declining interest over time. Warmachine with stagnant low interest over time.

This could mean that GW is eventually going to decline so far, that even Privateer Press will overtake them. But Privateer Press interest has stagnated over time, with little growth in interest on the web. What does this mean?

I think Google Trends is rather limited in what it shows. Does it really demonstrate interest?
I wish we could look at market share over time, but its such a small segment if the economy, there isn't any data on the web. No dice.

Anyone have any information on this?

Lots of people point to the threat of 3D printing. Claiming that people like me will be printing their own models in their basements rather than buying plastic multipose kits from GW. This hasn't happened yet and nothing really shows this trend surfacing at least a little.

It may not ever happen - often times technologies that we expect to be the next big thing often aren't. Take video phones. Nearly every science fiction film showed a regular use of video phones when I was kid. Video phones are here - Skype. But guess what? Non-video phones, still hugely popular.

I think home-based 3D printing will never compare to the convenience and fun of buying and assembling a plastic multipose model. In fact, GW has been using digital design for years and has pretty much established that it carries the gold in plastic kits every year.

Even Malifaux's kits, while very nice, can't compare to GW kits because they don't have personalization. You can't really customize them much. Sadly, GW seems to be producing kits with less-posability lately. GW got it right on the Riptide and Wraithknight, why can't we pose our Imperial Knights?

All in all, what do you guys think? Will GW's dominance persist, or will the increased competition by the likes of Corvus Belli and Privateer Press over take them?

White Dark Eldar

7th edition is nearing, already. I have barely learned the rules of 6th edition and a new edition is already about a month away. In hardback. WTF.

It's not hard to know why. GW probably sees big returns whenever a new edition comes out. Top that off with an impressive new starter kit (like Dark Vengeance). GOLD!

I bet the new starter kit is going to blow our socks off, and quite frankly, I am really glad its going to have orks in it. I've always wanted to paint up an ork army...maybe this new kit might start one for me.

I have decided that this summer will be devoted to completing a new 40k army. I know, I know. 7th edition is probably not going to be as popular as GW expects and there will probably be loads of folks fleeing the scene. Say what you want about their poor game-design, GW can make some kick-ass models, most of the time. That new IG truck is a hideous thing though, don't know what they were thinking there.

The new army will be the Dark Eldar,  so while its in progress, I am not accepting commissions. Not that I had many flowing in anyway.

There have been a lot of attempts in the past to do white Dark Eldar. I've been playing around with it. I think the key is to not actually use white, but colors close to white. Here is what I am working on now.

I think it might be better to do whole squads as tests, rather than single test minis. That way, you're already looking for shortcuts that will make army painting easier. I'm not too sure I like the result. I think it needs more variation and some other colors. I may go with greens or reds, or even yellows. Just not sure yet. Thoughts?

Progress on the Dark Eldar

I put about an hour's worth of time into these guys last night and I'm liking them more now. There is still something off, and I think I might try adding true metal gold to models. The shoulderpads, a few random armor plates...not sure. Using a different color on the shoulder pads has really drawn attention to the collars, a feature I really like. So many GW models have these huge shoulder pads and painting them dark makes them seem a little more reasonable.

One thing I do with a lot of my miniatures, especially any plastic multi-pose ones, is painting the heads separate. This time, I've superglued them to a bit of sprue and attached to an old paint pot for a mount. This way I can prime them together and paint them in detail before gluing them to the models. Perhaps getting the heads done will push me forward into liking the color scheme.

Rules and Information around 7th Edition

Warming - bullshit ahead. Skip to pic of Dark Eldar if you don't care for an academic's random musing on the miniatures industry.
Although it's not entirely puzzling that GW has released a new edition (7th) on the heels of a new edition (6th), one has to wonder. GW has never released core rule editions so quickly and it seems in general that the production of new rules -- or at least the sale of new rules -- has ramped up in the last year.

GW has released new codices, supplement codices, core rule expansions, and even new editions (herein referred to as rulebooks) for purchase at a rate never before seen. Surely, you could say that the new rules don't encompass what they once used to. In the hey days of White Dwarf, GW released new rules in their magazine nearly every month. So what has changed?

Ok - one could go into a whole analysis of the number of rulebooks produced per year and then look at the average price per rulebook and compare that over time. I'm not going to waste my time with that. We already know that those have significantly gone up since the introduction of digital rulebooks.

So what? Well if you also look at the average number of releases per army per year, I think that those have gone down slightly. What I notice is, each time a release is done for an army, it is - 1 large model, 1 medium sized unit, 1 new unit on foot, 1 clam shell character on average, (Tau had 1 more a new flyer). Look at Dwarves, Wood Elves, Eldar, Imperial Guard.

Could it be that information (rulebooks) is more profitable than matter (miniatures kits) and that's why we're seeing a ramped up rulebook rate?

Dark Eldar Update

Just one model to show you. Still a WIP. But I love how the head looks. Considering making the spikes a metal color to add visual interest. Going to do more work today...

Painting White Dark Eldar

Lots of painters out there have been enthused by the idea of Dark Eldar in white armor. There is some irony in it. People mostly associate white with cleanliness and purity. While Dark Eldar might appreciate a good tidying up, they certainly aren't clean.

Let's take a look at some Dark Eldar from the internet and see what other painters have come up with. I put 'white dark eldar' in a google image search and picked out a few interesting ones. I'll be judging the color choices more so than the painting skills here.

Check out Bushido's Dark Eldar on Dakka.
Short thread and I don't know if this army ever got done. He had a good thing going. He used an overall warm white with accents of cool blues. There is a good range of contrast on the model. It goes from the darkest black up all the white to ivory. Plus the color modulation adds visual interest. Totally works. Anyone know if this army is showcased somewhere?

Next example is one from _Kettu on Warseer.
This guy has used an off-white color rather than straight white. He's added battle damage to the armor which adds interest to the model. This model is essentially four colors - white, black, purple, and brown. I can't say I'm a big fan of purple, especially these kinds of purple. But this one is not bad.

I think the idea of battle damage on Dark Eldar is pretty fitting. These aren't your pure Craftworld Eldar are they? And battle damage goes so well on whites because you can see them. It's tough to carry this through an entire army.

I think mine might benefit from some battle damage and it helps cover up mistakes. But it might make the models too busy and cluttered. They already have a lot of visual detail due to the color modulation and other details.

I'll have to put together a step by step showing you all the process for painting the white. I've had a couple requests, but I think showing it might be better.

Is this really a "new edition"? Poppycock!

Warhammer 40,000 hasn't really changed much in the last 20-odd years I've been playing, thinking about, and hobbying wargaming. Let's take a look.

I got into 40k during 2nd edition. It was middle school. It was embarrassing to be into this stuff back then.

Chicks did not dig warhammer. The girls in our school took to calling us guys "army dudes."

Back then, vehicles were pretty rare and our armies were pretty small. I think I shoplifted about 90% of my army - Chaos Space Marines. Lots of lead on the table for sure.

I still have my old books.  If you've ever played Necromunda, those are basically 2nd edition rules. Complicated. Lots of adding and subtracting. Terminators with 3+ armor save (on 2d6. that is).

I remember the game being so difficult to get right with all the wargear, cards, and random tables. But I loved it.

These are the only books I could find. Good stuff these. Lots of cool artwork. Some of which still shows up in GW publications.

Blood Angels were so cool back then. So killer.

Squats were still around. But were headed toward oblivion. I think they just didn't want to do dwarves in space.
Then came 3rd edition. Man that was actually a new edition. Nearly ALL of the rules had changed significantly. They focused the game toward units, away from characters. We got a totally new system - new movement rules, new rules for close combat. Even the phases were arranged differently. You could shoot BEFORE you charged. That was genius!

But every "edition" since has been a refinement of that core system. Refinement is probably the wrong word for it. It was refined in some ways, but there has been lots and lots added since then. Some of which isn't at all refined.

3rd edition to 4th...refinement, some tweaking, not really big changes.

4th edition to 5th...again, refinement...Couple things removed (consolidating into combat), lots added (run, go to ground, lots of USRs). Core rules the same.

5th to 6th...ok this was pretty different than the previous addition, mainly because flyers, FMCs, allies, hull points were added. Vehicles move a bit differently but in effect just got faster overall. From a big picture view though, no core rules mechanics were changed.

6th to 7th seems to be even less so. Sure they've added a whole new phase...but its just an addition, not an overhaul. 2nd to 3rd was a complete overhaul. In fact, they had to include army lists for all of the armies in the core rulebook because no one had codex rules compatible to the new edition. It was awesome.

I'd love an actual change for once. I'd love to see what new innovative ways we could play battalion-scale 40k...but this new edition just isn't it. I guess we'll have to wait and see. Will it breathe new life in the game? Probably not.

Farsight Army Commission Work Comes to a Close

I finished a while ago (before Adepticon) but never showcased them here. They were the last items in a 6 month long commission for a client's Adepticon army. I wonder if any of you got to see it in person. I really enjoyed working on it and I impressed myself by keeping up momentum to get it done in time. Also some work on my new Dark Eldar army below...the end is still a long way off. Ah, 40k...

Not that anyone really cares, but I thought I should put it somewhere. I'm not currently accepting commissions.

Well that was a lot of drones. I invented a new way of mounting them for painted. Flying stands duct taped to a paint pot.

The beginnings of Torchstar. I really liked this simple conversion. The flamers were simply flamer barrels added to Riptide plasma guns.

The flag and head of Torchstar are available from Mad Robot resin kits.

GLOWY EYES!

Ended up switching the head to a white color. Made it more noticeable.

After painting all these drones, I really noticed how lazy GW was with their designs. The missile drones are simple missile pods stuck to the bottom of gun drones. Seriously?

My white Dark Eldar in a batch for painting. Still a long way to go on this chaps,. Having lots of fun painting them though. Kinda crazy thing about 40k...every time you want to try something new, you've gotta paint 40-some odd models...gets tiring.

Kabal of the Bleedin' Eye

I think having an army badge and unifying theme is essential to creating personality for your army. The army badge is crucial. It helps tie the elements of the army together immensely. For my Tau, I fell back on the GW supplied army badge, but this time for my Dark Eldar, I want something of my own choice.

After mulling over different things, watching game of thrones, googling heraldry from the Middle Ages, I came up with the idea of doing something with ravens and bloody eyes. I quick sketch in my notebook here:

And my idea was born -- The Kabal of the Bleedin' Eye. Wonky Eyes for short. Pink-eyes to those who would belittle them.

After that sketch, I went about combing the internet for more ideas. I found this:

Here I like how the eyeball is hanging and bleedin' but the crow's head needs some work.

The theme will be repeated across the army on banners, vehicle sidings and so on. I think I might even do some alternate heraldry - humans heads with bleeding eye-sockets. Something like the Bolton heraldry of the flayed man from Game of Thrones.

Here's a group of Kabalites I've been working on in the evenings. Lots sloppiness on some of the models, especially the glow effect. For rank and file troopers though, I'm pretty proud of them .

Confirm kill.

13 models at once. No task to be taken lightly.

Heavy gear for a spindly elf.

This model really makes me wanna do a fire team of Trueborn snipers with Dark lances.
The plan is to get these bleedin' eyes done and move to some reavers. I expect that the color scheme will look great on the bikes. Then I've got to convert a flesh-moulder. What do you think so far?

Bleedin' Eyes Sigil

Just a quick update. Got the Bleedin' Eyes sigil painted onto a banner. Looks alright for a first go. Hopefully I can repeat this across all the units in the army.
I think the raven's head should be a little higher next time, making the bleedin' eye more central to the image. I'll be coming up with some alternate sigils as I go.

Starting to feel the momentum build for these guys. Things have to go quick when you're building an army. I find that if I stall between squads, I lose it. Just like when I stall on a half-finished model. That said, I'm looking at finally painting my WHFB Chaos army. Who knows? Lots to paint.

These are the latest of my batch of Kabalites. They were all given unhelmeted heads. I love the wild hair styles the Dark Eldar have.

Separated at birth?

The shredder is a really cool looking gun...sadly completely ineffective.

These girls love their expensive hair dyes.

Women in Dark Eldar society...evil but equal.

Bleedin' Eyes Raider

I've been working on a raider for my slow growing army. The model was already assembled by the guy I bought it from, and it didn't include the crew so it was a good test piece. I must say, this model is a neat design, but its gotta be painted in sun-assemblies since its so 3-dimensional.
I got the sigil painted on but its a little messy. The yellow circle is a little large too. Still, I like it!

Since this was a used model, it came without the crew models. Or if it did come with the crew models, I can't find them in my huge stash of models. So I've set up some Kabalites to man the raider. Still some work to do on the model, including highlighting the black parts and painting on more markings. There's also the base to do. Still unsure about blood splatters, but I looked at a tutorial from From the warp.blogspot.com, but it wasn't entirely helpful.

Dark Eldar Progress and Infinity 3rd Edition Changes

$

0
Hey all, I've been quite busy lately working on my Master's thesis and a squad of wyches for my Dark Eldar Kabal. This ladies and gentlemen have been painted in a similar scheme to the warriors - all the colors are the same - but the models have a lot less white surface areas and more black all over them. They are about half-way done, and I hope to finish them in a few more session over the weekend.
When constructing the squad, I just couldn't imagine any of the special wych weapons being worth the extra 10 points. I figured the only good upgrades for the unit are haywire grenades, a unit champion and the phantasm grenade launcher. Those wych weapons just seem expensive for what they do. However, I decided to save them and assemble them on some alternate wyches in my next batch. That way I'll have them if they ever become competitive again. You'll notice the unit champion has one though, this is because I just liked to look of it. Hopefully my opponents won't mind the divergence from WYSIWYG.

If you didn't see it already, Corvus Belli is releasing a starter set for Infinity. While it's expensive. you'll get 14 metal models of the best quality I've ever seen around. The models are almost all re-makes of past miniatures and they have improved greatly. I plan on getting one of these sets for two reasons: 1) I want the models first and foremost and 2) the set actually gives you a decent set of playable terrain and a gaming mat that is 2' x 3' - perfect for gaming in my little apartment/flat.

3rd is sure to be release sometime this September and should be available for download for free from their website. I couldn't be more excited about this. Of the few rules changes that I have read about, the game seems to be headed to be a tighter ruleset.

Weapon ranges are changing. The most obvious changes are the range modifiers on the chart below (taken from Beasts of War's video). The first thing I noticed was the shotgun range categories - +6 to hit at 0-8 inches. That makes boarding shotguns a worthwhile choice and explains by the new Sun Tze carries one. The next big change is the -3 modifier to sniper rifles and HMGs firing at 0-8 inches. They now become more of a long range weapon choice and I can see them getting a lot less use on terrain-dense boards that you'll encounters at Victory Comics and NOVA Open. Personally I've always felt that their terrain was too dense and needed some more open space, but that's just my preference (I don't like it when there are hidey-holes on every inch of the board).

The rules for Camouflaged troops has also changed so that they are more consistent with the rest of the core rules. In 2nd edition, camo troops enjoyed a ton of exceptions to core rules that really made some situations complicated to sort out. We'll see how this changes the utility of camo troops but for the most part, I think its for the better.

Have any of you learned of any further rules changes? I'd love to hear about them.

Dark Eldar Wyches...Blurry Pics

So my phone really isn't cutting it anymore. I think I need to get serious about miniature photography. The matter is even more pressing because I've just discussed with the creator of MechaFront a deal to paint some of the new Mecha that he is producing. To help out I want to make a background so that we can get some good imagery out there.

Here is a peak at what will be coming out soon from this game:

I painted some of these before and I chose an off-white color scheme with some black and yellow highlights...in other words, exactly like my Dark Eldar. This time around I want to make something more like you'd see in Mechwarrior. So this is what I am thinking of. Something militaristic, heavily weathered, not elegant but bulky and stompy.

Work in Progress: Dark Eldar Reaver Jetbikes

$

Here are some of my near complete Dark Eldar Jetbikes. For you on the blogosphere, they probably look 100% done because the spots that need to be finished aren't visible in these pictures - the underslung weapons need to be detailed, their faces need a little work, the pony tails needs some work and the skulls and tassles on the leader's bladevane aren't painted yet.

Viewing your models in pictures actually gives you some good perspective. When I see these, I am wondering whether the battle-damage adds to the model or detracts from it. These models are detailed enough to have plenty of visual interest, which is what damage tends to add along with realism. However, I can see the red blood stains adding to the models so I think I'll keep those. As for the paint chipping and rust, I'm going to tone it down quite a bit on the rest of the my Reavers (I have 5 more boxes of these guys - excessive? yes.)

Once these blokes are done, I'm taking a break from Dark Eldar to paint some Infinity figs. I have about 10 Tohaa models that I want to paint in a single batch. I'm planning on bringing down my standards considerably on them and work on some speed-painting techniques. The plan is to use GW washes to paint the symbiont armor and doing some very general painting on the rest of the figs. I'm also going to stick to the studio paint-scheme to minimize the amount of time I spend making decisions on what colors to use.

Infinity the Game: Tohaa Battlegroup WIP

With a decent amount of Dark Eldar done, I decided to take a break and get my Tohaa painted up. I've assembled and primed a battle group of 10 models, adding up to a 300 pt list so I felt like I get get them done quick and get back to my Dark Eldar. To keep the decision-making down, I just decided to use the studio paint-scheme for these guys. After all, I like it and I know how to apply it. In fact, it's basically the same scheme as my Dark Eldar. I go through phases like this.

Here they are:
I'm painting 5 models at once, but these are the farthest along.

These two are Sakiels. Elite light infantry with some nasty kit.

Infinity is probably the funnest tabletop wargame that I've ever encountered. I've been on a losing streak for about 2 years now and I still love the game. Hopefully these Tohaa will have better luck than my Yu Jing.

Here are my Tohaa - not completely done, but close enough to show you guys some more photos. I really like these models, though they are a tad too detailed. Some of the straps are really small and tough to paint. Mostly I've focussed on making the models look good from 18 inches+ away.

I've go these models plus two Ectros (both variants), another Gao-Rael, and a Gao Tarsos primed and ready to paint. To be assembled - Chaksa Auxiliaries, Servants and a Tohaa doctor-engineer. My Neema model broke at the leg and I have been too lazy to contact Corvus Belli about it - I should get to that today.

In Western Africa, local people, doctors and nurses are fighting a war against an unseen enemy - Ebola. After watching Frontline's special on Ebola, it is clear resources are thin for stemming the tide.

Big congratulations to the NOVA Open Charity for raising over 20k for Doctors without Borders. Its really amazing to see that effort come off with such an impact. Who knows how many lives will be saved with those dollars? Surely it is a lot.

Since I was not able to participate in the effort this year, I've decided to do a little fundraising of my own. See this ork below:

This is a display model, but I think he'd make a great addition to an army as well. Nevermind that he has a square base.

He can be yours! Here how it works:

1) You contact me at timandlucka at gmailicus doticus comicus to discuss the offer.

2) You make a donation over 100 dollars to Doctors Without Borders through their website.

3) You show me proof of said donation via email (you can block out whatever information you want, but I need to see the amount, the date of donation and confirmation that it went to Doctors Without Borders. We can discuss how to do this ahead of time.

4) I pay for shipping and packaging and you receive the model for being a good human being. :)

5) You make note that ZERO dollars come to me or through me for this transaction.

If you are interested, contact me. There is only one of these guys so this will be first come first served.

I can provide more pics of the model if you'd like.

If this is a success, I will be doing this with more of my models.

Please share if you know someone who like orks. And hates ebola.
